we did not grow up with chickens at our home. alot of family members had them and my parents grew up with them.

We had personally started out with chickens just 3 years ago. But we are still learning new things all the time. I have even mentioned somethings in converstaion to my dad about chickens, etc. and he is still learning new stuff and HE TURNS 80 on the 31ST! Even a friend of mine, her and her mom are still learning and they have always had chickens.

Just goes to show you, you can always learn something new and never know 'everything'

I absolutely, totally agree with what some of you said. Actually, on this thread, what most of you said.

I agree number of posts does not indicate knowledge or experience, especially knowledge or experience about my climate, my set-up, my restrictions, and my goals. The way I look at it is that we are ultimately responsible for what we do. The people on here who share knowledge and experience are not responsible for what I do. I appreciate that knowledge and experience and really learn a lot. I think almost evey one of us tries to give truthful, helpful info based on our experience, but it may not necesarily apply. It is up to us to decide what advise we follow. What is an absolute must for some people just does not apply to my operation. A lot of what I did growing up on the farm many years ago does not apply to my current set-up, so some of my personal experience does not apply. And I try to bring in other opinions and knowledge. The local extension agent and the Texas A&M and Mississippi State websites are two sources I use. But it is up to me to filter if they are talking about a large commercial operation, a dual purpose flock, or someone breeding and showing chickens.

We all have different personalities. I'm not the type that will post "Oh, what lovely chicks". Nothing wrong with doing that and it does serve a good purpose. It is just not my personality. We all bring different things to this forum and that is good.

Sorry if I've ruffled anyone's feathers with this thread.I am not and do not claim to be an expert at anything especially chickens but I've had a lot of birds over the years.
My intent was to point out that it is rude for members with a high number of posts to join a thread with remarks about being the first or only person with over 100 posts (as if this gives weight to their reply) and then pretty much repeat what someone with a low number of posts says.....

Also the NUMBER of post tells me is someone is new to the forum, then only if its just a very low #.

Myself I Have been raising birds over 40 years, only been on the internet a few years, and this forum for less than a year.

Never to old to learn!!!!

Thats what is so great about having animals, like people no two are exactly alike. All of my birds have their own unique personalities and habits. I agree you can always learn something new and a lot of times chickens will surprise you by doing something they are not "supposed " to be doing

You certainly did not ruffle mine. Glad you posted it and hope I didn't hijack it too much. I figure random ramblings give a little more leeway for hijacking.

you did not upset me at all. i don't think anyone should act like they know everything! we can always learn something. i am still learning alot of different things about alot of different subjects

you just have to put yourself out there to grow and learn. but nobody should be snobby or a know it all. EVER! Especially online. It comes across as to crude and just plain rude. I get enough of that from people I know in person. I don't want that here or anywhere else online.

Yup.

Games and chatty threads account for many members high post count.

Very true.
I totally appreciate what jimann is saying. I was glad to see the thread. I am completely new to chickens and have found this site to be invaluable. I joined all the way back in October 08.

But I had already been reading the forum for months before I actually joined so I could post an issue. I've had people welcome me that have been here less time than me. (because they look at the # of posts and not the date joined) I spend my time doing more reading than posting. And searching. And I seem to be on here A LOT. really. So when I see the huge amount of posts some of the others have, I really have to wonder what kind of life some of these people have. And a lot of the really heavy posters have kids. I used to be envious, but now I'm just amazed.
Your post numbers are not a status symbol.
Happy, healthy, long-living chickens on the other hand.....could be.

Maybe I'm too naive, do people really count their posts? Seriously?? I guess I'll never be an expert since I have way more things to d than count how many times I've posted anything, anywhere!

Mediocrity rules!!
