Things I'm wondering:

• Would the rebuild work for pre-xf mentions?
• Would it send out a million notices to people that were tagged?
• If it would work and not send out a million notices, what would be the best way to run it (I assume it has to go through every post and PM, no?)

Working on those items before we pull the trigger on this.

What does a rebuild actually do?

Would it send out a million notices to people that were tagged?

When an existing post is edited and tag is added, an alert is not sent.

If it would work and not send out a million notices, what would be the best way to run it

I believe it simply goes through all of the previous posts and make sure that if there is an existing tag, it is activated properly

unfortunately, I don't think so

It crawls the entire post table a chunk at a time, but I don't think it touches the threads table. It can be run on only posts, however the lion's share of mentions are in posts and not in other content types (like profile posts) so I don't think it would make much of a difference.

unfortunately, I don't think so

there probably aren't that many in conversations (I haven't seen any), it's mostly in threads I think.
