Of course, those in the UK are the undisputed potato "hot shots." They have been growing spuds for centuries and have entire government offices to regulate the ebb and flow of the tuber around the nation.

As with anything, there are exceptions. I have a couple of gardening books from the UK, one which is rather old, and invariably they recommend heaping soil around the plant as it grows. This is because the potato grows a shallow root system and the earthing protects the tubers. Starting deep in a large bucket would go some way to mitigate this issue and prevent drying out, which is the culprit with surface rooted plants.

It also has the benefit of a growing defined, manageable crop in a ready-to-store container!

Has anyone ever tried growing them in a round of chicken wire with straw instead of soil? (I don't have any old tires laying around)

My neighbor is trying this for the first time, and I had heard of it, myself, but never tried it. I, also thought it might be too late to start some, but I found these potatoes at the store (they may be those Yukon Gold someone else is growing - would have to check the bag) and I am in love with these potatoes!!

The other night I made some pork steak and simple boiled potatoes with butter and pepper on them - I forgot I had a pork steak on my plate

those potatoes were the best.

If I could grow some that would be awsome, since there is only one store in town that has them (and for who knows how long - it's a Save a Lot).

ETA - checked the bag they are "Green Giant Klondike Goldust" taters. Hmm... Green Giant is a big company, I wonder if they are something Monsanto cooked up and can't be grown from the original.

you have to be watchful of store bought potatoes.. some might be treated with a non-sprouting agent. they will eventually sprout but it might take a long time..

check with family and friends.. somebody has sprouted potatoes in their pantry..

I've grown potatoes for many years, so trust me- (teehee)- There is nothing more satisfying than harvesting and eating your home grown taters.
