from your neighbor to the west. I live near Gastonia, NC. We started with Golden Comets, now have had Barred Rock chickens for the past couple of years, and they do really well here. I just got some Marans last month; they're still chicks but I also expect them to do well.
We provide basic shelter for our chickens, no heat in the winter or a/c in the summer. We make sure in the summer they have plenty of shady areas to escape the sun. We have a coop, but none of the chickens sleep in there, they all prefer the roosts in the lean-to outside. I'd recommend at two waterer's, even with only 4 chickens. When it's really hot, they drink a lot of water, and if one develops a leak or they spill it somehow they will have backup.
I'm over-run with chickens right now. I've got a bunch of two-month old barred rock chicks I hatched from our eggs on March 25th - I wasn't anticipating any broody hens, but two decided to go broody and should be hatching out chicks this week. If you decide you'd like some, just hit me up. It's hard to tell definitively which day-old chicks are males or females, but I know I've got 6 female two-month old chicks. I'd be glad to share!
