I agree with using a big magnet to clear the nails, etc. They can not only be harmful to the chickens, but to anyone walking around in the back yard.

Although most all backyard chicken folks would probably prefer their chickens to have at least *some* access to fresh 'pasture', it isn't a requirement.

If you've got all that wood and such, and hubby is good with building, think vertically....

Chickens don't care where they go or go...as mentioned before they do like to hide their eggs...and they will poo on the lumber. On the plus side they will keep the critters down, spiders and such....I don't know what the zoning is in your town for animals. The roosters if you get one will cause problems with the sleeping folks....if a light goes on in our home at 3 am....the rooster will crow....Good luck....the eggs are fabulous.
