I had my first poult hatch today and it has an issue with 1 leg. The leg shoots back and the toes appear slightly curled. It can't walk on it well but it is wobbling around the brooder. He had a pretty rough hatch and it took about 36 hours from the first hole we saw. Help, what can I do? It doesn't sound like splayed leg really since it is back instead of to the slide. I put a towel in the brooder to give him something to grip to better. I'm giving some pictures (or trying to)

Poor baby. You will have to splint it back into place so that it can heal in the correct position. You can splint it using a pipe cleaner and then you will want to flatten the toes and secure them in place. This can be done with a small piece of cardboard using protective tape. You don't want the tape when peeled off to remove skin or feathers. If you want to secure it like most do for splayed leg, you can do that in addition to straightening the toes.

You can also place the chick in a chicken chair. See link below.

Thank you, I'm just waiting on my husband to get home to help do this. For having a bad leg this poult is still very active and I can't manage on my own. Since he has been in the brooder the leg actually seems somewhat improved. He is able to pull it in the right position to stand now, he just can't walk with it staying that way.

Just an update, he is doing really well, and walking completely normally now with the adjustments. I already had to replace his "shoes" once (he walked saucer through the water and got the tape wet) and it looks like the toes are already looking more naturally straight. He was has a brother now (or sister, just calling them both him for now), and is happy for the company.

These little guys are so sweet. They love to be held. They are very active, and are pecking at some food I put on a paper towel. They still don't want to drink from the dish though. I am dipping beaks, and watering with a dropper for now. They are drinking well with the dropper and will come peck at it and follow it around when I put it in there. They are only 1 day, so I'm hoping they still get it soon and drink from the dish (I am using a shallow Tupperware lid with some shiny marbles in it, I took the chick waterer out for now because I was afraid with the little guys bad leg he might fall in).

Very good!! I'm glad to read this update. Sounds like you are taking great care of them. They are so cute!!! I'm sure he will make a full recovery and they will begin drinking on their own. Continue to keep us posted.

Good job! :thumbsup
