Poult Sounds

I’m curious about poult sounds. It’s my first time with turkeys, so I’m wondering about what they mean. I’m pretty good at interpreting my chicks sounds now.  So my 3, 2 week old poults have been making this popping/clicking sound. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? It’s kind of sharp sounding.

What other sounds should I expect from them, besides the high pitched peeping they make when they can’t see each other?

The popping clicking could be a respiratory problem or little toms trying to vocalize. Young poults mostly peep, a lot.

It must be a tom then, because I'm sure it's not a respiratory problem. It only happens occasionally and it does sound like a vocalization. They do peep peep quite a lot. Especially my 1 week old poult. He/she is very spoiled though.

My first batch of poults ever had two Narragansett that make a sound that was almost like a sneeze. Scared the heck out of me. About a week later they both started displaying as tiny toms after making the sound which I know now is a part of the toms display. They were the only two that displayed that young, they were about 3-4 weeks. Should be interesting to see if they start displaying for you.

I think it might be what I call the "bink" sound. They do that when they're startled or unsure about something. Even the adults will "bink" if they're faced with something new.

I haven't seen any displaying yet. We shall see. The person I got them from did tell me something that I'm curious is true. She said if you balance them on your hand and they flip their tail up, they are a boy, and if they flip it down, they are a girl. Old wive's tale or not?

Sure, I'll try to catch them in the act. Here's a pic of my 2 week old mottled black and one of the 3 week old bourbon reds. You think it really looks 3 weeks old or is it older? Seems really big, but I'm brand new to turkeys. (Plus my 1 week old silkie. I was taking a comparison pic between their sizes.)
