Hello! I think that it is a vitamin and mineral deficiency as well. Think of it kind of like rickets: the bones get weak and the joints start having trouble. That’s what you’re most likely seeing — just with a different deficiency. The food label has lysine in it, and that’s great, but the crude fat is not very descriptive. Something that is also pretty essential is choline, and manganese supplements do wonders as well. Niacin is not as crucial for poults as it is for waterfowl, but it, too, helps. Hope this helped! Let us know how the poult turns out!

Niacin and thiamine are very essential for poults. Perosis is common especially in broad breasted poults that are given a feed with inadequate niacin and thiamine.

I’m sorry, but I didn’t say it is not necessary. Vitamin B/Vitamin B Complex vitamins are important, but the primary focus of these vitamins is to boost the overall health of the bird by promoting a healthy nervous system.

Swollen hocks and leg twisting can be caused by more than one deficiency. The importance of choline is that it allows for vitamins, such as V-A and V-D to be dissolved and absorbed, as they are fat-soluble, and choline synthesizes the lipids they are able to do so in.

Remember, I’m not asking for help in this scenario — I’m merely giving advice regarding the situation. Hope this helps!

This article is very similar to what I was saying earlier. Manganese is important as muscles around the joints are not enough. There can be adequate niacin, but without metals that allow calcium to bind, joints — let alone the entire skeletal system— will not be able to form properly, allowing tendons to slip more easily. I’ve seen this mainly in goslings as they hatch with relatively small extremities for such a large torso to support.

Good find!

Thank you all! We are attempting to correct through splint, therapy and the water now has added vitamins. These 2 are heritage turkeys and have been housed together get the same food and water and the other is fine. However the darker one is getting the water with added vitamins as well. This morning when I checked on them the Golden's hock was swollen and it keeps stretching the affected leg back and the foot is straight until the bird takes a step. We are hoping that by trying a combination of treatment we can hopefully fix this. The foot after one day is starting to turn forward. It's minimal but it's progress. Just going to keep at it. If we aren't successful and it becomes permanent will the bird be able to have a full life? She has been walking around more with today's splint/hobble.

The dark one decided he was going to supervise my doctoring from the best possible vantage point.
