Poultry Breeds of Spanish Ancestry

Well, I think I can report a reasonably successful hatch. I have 11 chicks plus 3 that are still working on their shells, three dead and one more that I thought was dead. I opened the top of the egg to check why it died. It wasn't moving and when I touched it, it did move. The membrane was a little tiny bit dry but not so much it was being shrink wrapped. So, anyway, the egg was already opened, I wet the membrane and made the smallest hole where the tip of the beak is, wrapped the egg in a very wet paper towel and put it back in the hatcher in a position that I could watch it through the hatcher window to see how it's doing.

That's all the help I will provide - humidity. We'll see how it goes. I have 11/19 that went into lock down. Hopefully, I'll get 4 more chicks. That will be 15/19. Not bad. Somebody more math minded can figure out the percentage if they care.

A person from the region of Catalan joined BYC--CatalanState is the name they go by. They raise Catalanas, might be interesting to see what they might have to add to the conversation. The Catalana breed seems quite an ideal bird.

Thank you southernmomma

I sent him a personal invite. Hopefully he'll show up here pretty soon.

cool congrats !

In the States the breed is officially called Catalana del prat Leonoda, and call them Catalanas. Even Cats for short.

You will notice that in Spain they use a variety of names, and yes they use a Latin name. It is easy to see why.

The name seams to be associated with the region, but interchangeable. Prat Leonoda seams to be used most often where they are from. Leonoda is the color, Catalana and Prat is the breed and location. They also come in white. I have never seen a breed called by so many variations of a name.
just like Penedesenca comes from the Pendes region and Empordanesa the Emporda region of Spain

I have especially enjoyed the birds that I have. They are fantastic birds. Energetic and sharp, but not flighty. Actually pretty smart birds. Great layers, and all business. No BS. No wasted feed with these birds. I only wish that I had tried finding them sooner. It makes no sense to me why more are not interested in them. Then, looking at what is coming from the hatcheries, it does make sense.

That is a great hatch!

I call any hatch with at least two chicks successful. 0 is bad and one is sad....

Update: The one that I found still alive is history. It hadn't even tried to move. I don't know what the problem was and I'd gone as far as I was willing to go.

One of the other three hatched shortly after adding wet paper towels around them all.

There are still two and they're still at it.
