Poultry Breeds of Spanish Ancestry

Hi all,

I'm from Catalonia and I recorded some time in this forum, the user Lacy Blues advised me to visit this very interesting topic.

I raise Catalana del Prat Lleonada, in the improved variety, which is heavier than the traditional variety and performs better meat. Unfortunately a fox killed many animals and I currently only have two adult hens, but I'm trying to repopulate the chicken and add more catalan races.

If I can answer any questions about the Catalan races will be a pleasure.

Greetings

CatalanState Welcome to the thread and thanks for dropping by! I'm real sorry to hear about your mishaps with the fox and hope you are able to find a replacement cock or two and perhaps even some hens. Keep us posted on how that goes please. gjensen on here raises Catalanas and hopefully he'll be on sometime soon to say hello as well!

Catalan, you showed up at a good time. Thank you for stopping by.

What would help me is the ability to read the Spanish Standard for the Catalana. We have our Standard, but it would be interesting to compare.

Any information or experiences would be helpful.

One question that I have is does the traditional Catalana have a tendency to be broody? I have read mixed reports.

Thanks to all for the welcome.

In response to jgensen, according to the studies I've read and personal experiences about 14% of the hens tend to stay broody, and tend to be good mothers.

In this PDF you have a lot of information of Catalana del Prat, Penedesenca, Empordanesa and another breeds of catalan livestock in catalan, you can translate with google or you can ask me any questions you have.

And this is a study about the traditional and improved varietys of Catalana, Empordanesa and Penedesenca, in spanish.

Hi CatalanState :)

I can only get a partially translated website and the pdf is of course in Spanish so I'm curious, what is the improved variety improved with?
Mine tend to go broody and are good mothers.
Personally I think this is a valuable trait. I nosed around and found pictures of your birds, so handsome. You did say they were long in filling out--do you have ages and weights you wouldn't mind sharing? Also, you mentioned infusing your line with something; do you mean adding a different breed for a generation? Like a buff Minorca? I mean no insult, just attempting to gain insight.

Thanks,
M

I think Black Penedesenca would be a good option.
They are not mean but are super alert.
They have good size for a smaller bird. They are very heat hardy as well.
The blacks will give you the best bet at diversity since they where imported 3 times and there are a few really good breeders with them
that have been working with them awhile
@ChickenCanoe has nice ones . Lee Penny and Dirty Ankle Acres all have nice birds. there are more but they can get you a good start.
My Boy looks more like the birds I have seen from Canada with stockier build and less White on the Ear lobes.
he has a great great great comb. Best I have had.
My hens look ok. I have sent eggs to Joshua at Dirty ankle Acres of my crele and am hoping to get black back to add

Here is what I have,
just starting with the blacks

I can't help but be impressed, I'm turning into a sucker for these large combs!
When a breed is imported multiple times how is it ascertained that they differ genetically from what is already here? Are there tests run or are the birds imported from a different flock in the originating country?

Thanks,
M

Hi CatalanState :)

The improved variety is the result of the selection of heavier animals conducted since 1986 to get a good carcass weight at 12-14 weeks of age. There are improved varieties of Catalana Lleonada, Black Penedesenca and Red Empordanesa.
