Poultry Breeds of Spanish Ancestry

Hi Ron. Thanks for sharing. Very nice birds.

I was wondering, while looking at your Pita Pintas, how they differ from Anconas? Can you point out the differences for those of us who haven't a clue please?

They are very similar and may have common ancestors. Anconas came from Italy which is not far from Asturia Spain.

Pita Pintas are bigger and the comb does not flop over to the side. The tail has a different angle too. Pita Pintas lay brown eggs while Anconas lay white eggs. They also have different behaviors. Anconas are typically flighty while Pita Pintas are very calm and rarely fly.

All could be explained by separate breeding over 100 years though.

Thank you. I thought Anconas were an Italian breed but I wasn't sure so I didn't say it. Those are some interesting differences and I agree, they probably could have been attained by separate breeding over 100 years time. Nice that they're calmer.

I had some Anconas for a very short time several years ago. They didn't even reach adulthood before I sold them off... not because of anything really to do with them but I needed to focus and they are just one of the breeds that had to go.
