I totally agree that it would be more trouble than its worth...

Except Pekings are extremely difficult to tell apart.

Unless there's another method instead of leg bands?

My 2019 Spring Ducklings are still wearing their zip-tie leg-bands they got at an age of about three weeks. I had zipped them quite loose, so that they would just not slip over their foot and there's still wiggle room today. You can get then off pretty easy and safe by using a nail-clipper:
