I wish mine were more like that! They have a dish with oyster shells in it at all times but they still choose to eat the eggs. Not exactly like that, but I used to have this hen who would eat any eggs that were laid before she had laid, then lay her egg. I started giving the flock a lot of oyster shells and as long as she had plenty, she'd leave the other eggs alone. As soon as I slacked (or ran out) on those oyster shells, she'd be back eating every egg laid before she could lay.![]()
That's one confused rooster.You do realize that's not a hen?View attachment 3545513
I've never had the oyster shells separated...I wish mine were more like that! They have a dish with oyster shells in it at all times but they still choose to eat the eggs.![]()
I mix them in with the grain so the chickens will eat them thinking that it's the grain. The most issue I've had with them not eating the oyster shells is when the hens spit them out. Then when they're doing that and still need oyster shells, I step it up a notch by covering the top of their feed with a small layer of oyster shells when I refill the feeder. They'll hopefully be hungry when I return the feeder, so they'll eat the oyster shells trying to get to the grain. (I monitor my hens' eggshells and egg eating habits, so when both are good, I mix in less oyster shells, if any at all.)Since you won't give me an umbrella, I'll grow one of my own!View attachment 3546001
