poults

Do the coins work because they flash and that draws the curiousity of the poults? I havent had problems with poults not knowing where water is.

Mine would not drink enough and become dehydrated overnight and die the next day. I always dip their beak in the water but they still wouldn't drink enough. But the coins in the water worked great! He also stopped the flipping over on his back and not being able to get up. His legs are alot stronger now and he is eating fine. I can't wait for my others to hatch out and hopefully they will be easier. Thanks!

ive had chickens do that, lay their head back to the point they roll over.......its been a long time but if i remember correctly it can be attributed to 2 things, either a sickness or a vitamin deficiency?

i am looking forward to getting some polts in a few weeks!! will be my first time with them.

I put small pebbles in the water. I didn't want to use coins because who knows where those nasty things have been? I also had my hand in the brooder box alot with the newly hatched poult, touching him and carressing him to keep him company since he was a lone hatchling and brought him out with me because he was strongly bonded to be. I made a beak with two fingers and made it look like a turkey drinking so he'd do the same...and he did! It was adorable!

Turkey babies do as they see momma do, and my hand was momma. He'd eat nuggets of turkey feed and diced clover from my finger. Diced clover supplies a tiny bit of moisture to him too if he's not drinking. His nickname is snood btw. He's full grown now.

Did it hatch early, or get helped out of the egg? Sometimes "helping" makes them do that, and they just need the extra time they should have been spending inside the egg, finishing developing, using up their yolk. When they have an extra day or two to finish developing they strengthen up, and walk and eat fine. Aske me how I know? I'm a serial "helper" and have killed more than my share by helping out.

I think you are right on track with the helping the poults out of the shell causing them to flip. I had to open the incubator to help a baby goose out and the turkeys were starting to hatch out also. So I helped the baby goose out but since I messed up the humidity I helped the last two turkeys out also. Now I have two that are flipping over. I tied there legs together thinking it might help but so far no help. they proably will not make it :{
