Powhatan Virginia Swap Meet November 1st

I am just wondering how you knew that they died at 19 days? The eggs should have been untouched after day 18 untill a least day 22. Maybe they did not hatch because the air pocket was not big enough and they drown when they were pipping the air pocket. Which means to high humidity during the beginning of incubation. Or the temperature went over 103 for an extended period of time during the last few days.

I will check and see if I can get some mixed up eggs from my neighbor, but I am not sure if I am going to Powhattan now. I may have family coming for a weekend visit... (of all weekends).

The eggs were active and when you watched them you could see it, or you could tell by the marks they were moved when you looked. Then the next day they were totally still and didn't move. I thought maybe this was normal. We didn't touch them after day 18. I was having some trouble with the humidity the first two days though it didn't get that high, but then I took out the red plugs and it stayed constant after that (this is a still air Hovabator.) When I raised humidity on day 18 by adding water to the other channel it seemed OK too but I also closed the red plugs back up. Should I have left them open? There could have been a temperature spike when no one was home too, I don't know for sure. Everything seemed to be going well except the outside temperatures were fluctuating a lot and I found myself tweeking the temps in the middle of the incubation time but all but two chicks seem to have lived past that time. They were shipped eggs too, so maybe there was high humidity during shipping? How could I tell?

When we opened them up they were feathered and developed and filled the egg, but still had a yolk sac, which is another reason why I think they were day 19.

Thanks for any light you can shed on this! I am trying to learn so I can do better.

Tina and I won't be able to make it to Powhatan. Today ended up being an impromptu goat day. We picked up 3 Nigerian Dwarves, 2 Boer/Nubian paints, and 2 Jacob sheep..... add that to 2 Nubians, 16 chicks in the brooder, 8 birds in the coop and 12 eggs in the incubator... Whew! On September the 1st we had 5 dogs and 5 cats. And yes they do sleep together!

This is starting to sound a bit like a Christmas carol!

I am sorry, I was just too sick this morning to make it out to Powhatan. If anyone brought hatching eggs for me let me know and maybe we can mail them and I'll pay shipping, or maybe I could pick them up another day.

After all my excitement I wasn't able to make it either

I also spoke to my friend and she doesn't want a bunny any more because she isn't sure if her "Lola" bunny isn't "Lolo" LOL. She is too afraid to get babies after I told her about my hamster fiasco - back in CA I started with 2 'brothers' - one turned out to be a girl and my soft heart left me with 6 cages and 48 hamsters!! We took them to the market and gave them away...what an experience!

Anyway, I'm sorry I missed it. Sharon, let me know when you hatch your new chicks. I'm excited to hear about them. The one polish I got from you is the sweetest thing ever - I think it's a roo. I'll post pictures soon. hee hee.
