Today I was checking on the youngsters and say that 3 of the 4 have got pigeon pox on their faces.. big yellow blisters.
All the adults seem fine... although I lost a weaned youngster last week which has one pox spot on its beak and lots of air and fluid in its crop.
The squabs are still eating and acting normally.
Does this mean that my entire flock of adults and the other squab will come down with it, or are the adults more resistant?
Its no use moving the infected squabs as their parents my stop feeding them.. and I am sure that if they have the virus its in the environment now.
I don't know where this came from as I have not had any new birds in my loft for over a year.
My rooster also has got fowl pox on his comb. The pigeons and chickens mix together in the day on the lawn when free ranging. Is pigeon pox the same as fowl pox in chickens?
Any advise as how to control the virus spreading or how to help the youngsters recover faster?
Is the disease spread from bird to bird by contact or droppings, or only insects bites?
I think I am going to cover the coop in mosquito netting.. as there are lots about... but its going to be very had to make it totally mosquito proof and its not going to look nice!!!
