Prairie Sky Farm
In the Brooder
Hi, I'm Becca and I've named my home Prairie Sky Farm.
I've had chickens for over 20 years. Right now, I have 23 hens and 2 roos. I have White Faced Black Spanish, Easter Eggers, Buff Orphingtons, & Red Stars. I just received 10 Deathlayer eggs from PA today & will set them in the incubator tonight. (Will let you know how many I get hatched!) I enjoy caring for my girls & collecting the eggs. The routine of caring for them is soothing. This summer, I entered my White Faced Black Spanish rooster in the Poultry Open Class at the county fair and he won 1st place!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so proud of that little blue ribbon and my rooster, Mac. I wish I'd remembered to get a picture of him and his ribbon.
A couple of years ago we had a fox or coyote kill our entire flock of 12 girls in one night. I cried all day over their loss. It took us weeks to "Fox Proof" our coops and chicken yards. I haven't lost a single chicken to them since I made them more secure than Fort Knox!
When I not caring for the girls, I do housework, canning, paint by numbers and watching TV. I'm a retired Nurse & also spent 6 years in the Army as a nurse, too. My husband, Gary, of 42 years, is retired from the Army. He likes chickens, too! We have cattle, turkeys, a dog and a cat on a 160 acre farm. We named our farm, "Prairie Sky", because you can see miles of prairie from our hilltop. I "discovered" BYC last year and just decided to join the family to socialize with other people that liked their chickens as much as we did. Gary sells our extra eggs at his workplace.
Well, I've rambled enough. Catcha later, Becca
