pre-fab chicken coops

This old post could use a boost.

Here is a real good builder for a fair price in NE Georgia. Not far out of NW South Carolina where I am. Good stuff Don makes I can assure you. Mine is working perfectly. Birds take to it like they knew it all their life. The Green stained one on his main page is the one he built for me.

Here is a picture of one of the smallest model (4-8 bird rated) and this one sells for $450 Painted. The main frame of it is treated wood as well. No stranded pressed board either. Just good solid wood and plywood and everything is miter cut and trimmed out nicely. The nest boxes come off with removal of a couple screws for easy cleaning.

I'm glad to see a BYC member has one of Donald's Cockadoodle coops!

I'm in Western NC, and have been considering getting one myself. If you're still looking at this post, could you tell me more about it? Do you find that the nest boxes are too high for the birds? With the roost so close, are you having to clean poop out of the nest boxes a lot? How "human-friendly" is it - easy to clean?

I'm looking for a coop too. Some of the ones earlier on the post sounded great, but the links don't work anymore. I'm really looking for something more like a playhouse look rather than a normal coop. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

This is a excellent company to deal with and their kits are easy to put together. Chicken Coop Kits At the time we started our flock, there were absolutely NO coop kits or plans on the market, so I ordered the Victorian Playhouse kit. Everything was cut out and primed, so all dh & I had to do was screw the panels together and paint. He installed a cedar shake roof on our coops.

I bought a prefab coop last summer when we decided to get a few hens. We got one that looks exactly like this:

We purchased ours from Martins Garden Center near Tyrone PA and paid about $700. For an extra $50 they delivered it (about 30 miles) and placed it exactly where I wanted it in the yard.
I love it! Its very easy to clean and very durable. The only adjustment we made to it was to cut out a 2"x2" space near the point of the roof and covered it with a heating grate piece from Lowes to add extra ventilation.

I know the price seems high, but we didn't have spare materials lying around. We priced out the cost of materials at Lowes to build a similar one (wood, window, roofing shingles, etc) and the materials came to almost $500. Given that, I thought the price was fair.

Here's what mine looks like with the run we built around it. The picture was taken around the holidays so you'll see its decorated.
