Predator deterrent cheap and easy

actually I thought both of those were very interesting ideas and A+ for originality. If I was to use such method I would put some sort of short (like 1 foot tall) garden separator thing/fence to make it look more like a moat or garden and less likely to be stepped in by a human. but something a predator would step over with out a thought.

LOL, ghetto racoons.

I would think, like someone else already mentioned, that broken glass would be a liability if someone got hurt... same with fork tines... I have too many non-chicken pets I'd be worried about with that (cats & dogs).

I think I'll stick to aproning out some hardware cloth around the coop and run.

a racoon could very easily just pick the forks out of the ground and clear himself a nice little path right up to the fence.

I did have one person tell me he buries broken glass around the perimter of his run and coop. When a predator digs they end up with bloody feet. I have not tried it as it seems like one would need to dig all that out if we were to every move our fence line. He does swear by it for his protection.

If one can't keep them away, the last defense is keeping them out.
1/2" hardware cloth will keep 'em out.
But if you're lucky enough to live way out in the boonies, trip wires and claymores have never been known to fail.
Maybe some WP* mines, too.

seems like alot of trouble, i have used a portable radio tuned to a 24 hr talk show, leaving it on loud enough to only hear when you start getting close to the chicken coop, seems to have helped alot, broken glass and forks sticking up seems like more of a hazzard to me,, but it's not my yard,, lol,,

seems like if you go thru the trouble to do the digging ya would put wire down, i would rather pull up wire later on than try and remove broken glass,,

Yikes !!....and I just spent the better part of two weeks digging up broken glass from the area around the chicken coop so they wouldn't get hurt themselves. Years of "bottle toss" debris.

I am waiting to see the fork forest. Even if these ideas don't work for everyone it does make the wheels grind outside of the box. A glass moat could be quite beautiful and a fork forest the same. What works for one person may not work for everyone. What other moat ideas would keep the predators out. Like most things if you make it inconveniet there are other food sources we just have to make our chickens more work than it is worth for them. Everyone wants an easy meal.
