Predator deterrents?

What kinds of predators are you dealing with? The only thing I can think of are lights/blinking lights outside the chicken coop, fake owls, and sun catchers. Some of those would only work on the day. When are they getting to your birds?

Read a Journal article on these forms of deterrents and it said that none were effective. They found electric in addition to 1/2" hardware cloth to be the most effective predator protection. I love electric! If you have cameras, you watch them hit that electric and they are not back again!

First find out what is attracting the predators and deal with that. Usually it is wild birds or rodents colonizing a coop. Feed security, metal barrels, treadle feeders, general sanitation like cleaning up travel paths for the snakes and other predators, also for the rodents. Past that, hardware cloth, not chicken wire, pay for the wire of pay to replace the chickens!
