Ok so i had my first hawk have a go at my silkie never had a problem with them before this one in particular i had watched being raised along side my older birds this spring and never did his parents have a go at the them when they where babies so i figured that with the copious amount of squirrels and songbirds and other easy prey i figured we would never have a problem and we didn't... till today. whilst me and two friends of mine where skinning a raccoon we heard this huge crash sounding like a dog or something had run into our chain link fence near my two pullet and two cockrles so at first i think its this darn cat someone abandoned some weeks ago so i rush over there buck knife still in hand ready to not hurt but put the fear of God in this cat for having a go at my chickens since the whole neighborhood pitied it an feeds it regularly so this would have just been a kill for sport. so i get over there look over the fence and two feet from where my babies were foraging lays this dazed and confused young red tailed hawk the same one of the two i watched grow up

had tried to snatch one of my babies who where right next to a fence so when he swooped in he ran head first full speed in to the fence so first reaction is to scream get the babies in now! so i throw my knife down (in fact i think it's still out there

) and me and my friend go running scooping up the babies while my boyfriend monitors the hawk which is now airborne and circling not sure if trying to line up another shot at them or still shaken from that hit to the fence well once the babies are safe me and a friend just each pick up a stick and start running toward where we last saw the hawk once again ready to strike fear into a beast so we chase him yelling and waving sticks like the mob of villagers on Frankenstein till he is completely off and heading away from my land and this hawk was VERY lucky i know and respect the protection they have cause if it were any other predator it would end up like the coon

... who will either be a hat or a wall decoration haven't decided yet and of course after the Big Bad Birdie was surly gone my little silkie hen lets out her little victory screech and then starts complaining about being locked up and hopful the hawk now thinks my chickens come with their own force field and is to scared to try that again

so have ya'll every had a predator fail as epic as this?
