predator or neighbor taking my chickens?

Sometimes it's best not to make huge waves with neighbor, I understand.

Ok, so I caught the dog in my yard with my chicken in its mouth, watched it drag the chicken off, and my daughter and son witnessed the dog drop the chicken in his yard. So, if the dog returned do you think we would be justified? Im not against rottweilers (i know you werent asking me but still...) im just against any animal that comes on my property and kills my animals. Hubby never said what he was going to do, he may just be planning to talk to the sheriff himself.

Sounds like the dog is fairly friendly(it wanted to be petted?)?
Maybe get it into a cage and call animal control?

Your situation is quite different than the statement I responded to in my previous reply. For your situation, the justification would depend on your location as different statutes have different points at which a livestock owner is justified - from being an animal who is has recently killed livestock and is now being spotted (similar to what you are asking above) to the animal having to be in the process of actually attacking the livestock.

Do you know for sure it's their dog and it has tags? If it doesn't you could certainly contain the animal and call animal control for a dog on the loose.

No one would question an unknown dog entering and attacking animals on your property. But when it's someone else's known dog, that's a problem. It's treated a whole different way.

I cant catch the dog. Ive tried other times it was in the yard. But he did walk up to my daughter on his property so maybe she can. The way I see it, he has gotten up to 5 chicken dinners that he hadnt paid for grrr

In all honesty, I cant say it is their dog. It has a collar but no tags. It runs loose. I have seen them feeding and playing with the dog, they have a dog house but no other dog around, and everytime Ive chased it off it has ran back to their yard. So Im assuming its their dog, but without tags they could always tell me or the authorities that its not. I dont even know for sure thats what took my other chickies, im just assuming based on this attack and the others disappearing without a trace. When he ran off with my hen, there was no sign of anything in my yard. Anyway, we just finished with what my youngest daughter refers to as a " no dig fence" lol. Hopefully that will protect my other chickens even if the dog comes back. The one that was attacked this morning has finally come out of the coop and is scratching around with the others.

Unless you live in a a neighborhood with houses on all sides, I agree with others time to shoot. There are leash laws everywhere and you are always allowed to protect your livestock.

I don't care how friendly the dog acts, after 5 kills it would not get a chance for number 6, I would have drawn the line at 2. Once is happen stance, 2 is neighbors not taking care of their animals, and they get a warning, the third time it's over. No more talking.

I wonder if you had shot their dog if they would come out of the house, bet they have something to say then. It's ridiculous and not on you to make sure they control their dog.

I think the comments about trying to catch the dog are insane, yeah let's try and catch a big dog that constantly comes around and kills chickens at will. Remember most people get bit by "friendly" dogs

Hopefully hubby will call the law ... When they come out ask them what you can do the next time it has a chicken in its mouth?
