Predator question

I’m all for saving the wild life they are only doing what comes natural, I feel it’s up to us as caretakers to do all we can to protect our flocks etc. I’m not saying if a predator was after one of mine I wouldn’t kill it, I would do my best to protect. I’m just saying wild life is special. Around here people will go out of their way to run over a ground hog just because they will get into a garden. It’s not like they are hiding in the bushes thinking to themselves hey let’s run havoc in that persons garden they just see food. My biggest per peeve is people letting their dogs run loose and they have no idea they are on someone else’s property Killing their ducks!
I was replying to the question "what is sss". Each person chooses how to protect their livestock and pets. Every situation is different and every persons reaction is different. Stay safe and keep anything you are responsible for safe.

I completely respect that philosophy, and I myself take that attitude about 99%of wildlife, those around my birds not withstanding, I have a friend who says there are 2 kinds of people, wolves and sheep, I disagree, I believe there are 3, I think there are also shepherds, I try to be the latter.

Nicely put.

:goodpost:

A raccoon opened the gate.
I caught a raccoon in the act and he had my hen in his mouth.
She had a deep injury under her wing. Maybe the raccoon was not hungry but sadly, you will never know what happened.....my heart breaks too for those little ducks and for you.
I was numb for a month, when a fox massacred my chickens.
Knowing I was not there to save them in their time of need, has never left me.

Put all that hurt and anger into your coop. :hugs

Im so sorry for your loss. I love my ducks and have raised all of my birds from babies so the bond is strong. Ive lost some of my ducks to dogs before and this looks a lot like what happened. Dogs are way smarter than people give them credit for. I have dogs who know how to open doors. My mom had a dog who could open gates. If the gate was locked she would find a way to climb on the brick fence to get out. Because the birds weren't gutted and feathers weren't all over I have to say this really looks like a dog.

I hold a very similar philosophy. I had to put a possum down once because he kept coming and getting into my coop. Man I cried when I killed him. I hate doing it and I always try so hard for it not to get to that point.
