preferance on roosts

Almost finished building my coop. Outta curiosity has anyobe found their chickens to desire a 2x4 or a natural tree limb for a roost?

2 x 4s are great. They like to have their toes kind of flat so they can warm them up while sitting with their chest feathers. If the toes curl down too much they get cold.

If you are trying to go with free, I'd just get larger branches so they have lots of room on the top to cover their toes while the foot is a bit flat. They really do love 2 x 4s- turn them so they are sitting on the widest part.

I've read a lot on the 2x4s. Money isn't the worry. Just curious to see what others have experienced

Mine prefer the tree limb, their second choice is the narrow side of a 2x4.

However, we live in South Carolina; if we lived in the north, they would roost on the flat side of a 2x4 whether they liked it or not.

Mine prefer the 2x4, 2 up, but bigger birds might need the 4 up.

I use tree branches or saplings, 2" to 4" diameter. Also the rafters in my coop are 4" fence posts, and even the bantams like those. mary
