Preferred photo format?

Regarding attaching photos, options are given for thumbnail and the full-size picture.
From the site’s perspective, is one preferred over the other?

I'm just a nobody but I prefer the full sized image so I'm not forced to click and wait for a larger photo to load and I can see details clearer, faster.

It usually doesn't make a huge difference, and is user-preference.

The most common time it makes a big difference is when posting a lot of images, since it can be really slow for pages to load for visitors on mobile and/or slow connections. In those cases it's good to use thumbnails, or a mix of a few full-sized images and then thumbnails for the rest.
