Pregnant Hamster Question

We don't have a hallway, the door opens up to the outside. We moved here in mid-June 2009 found her a week ago on Saturday.

That's the REALLY weird thing! The hamsters were found in two completely different apartments. I'm over here at number 3, whereas the other one was found over at 78 something which is across 3 parking lots, 1 pond and countless ducks.

I am VERY curious as to where it's coming from!

I want to read animal minds...GAR!

Now I have heard of Rat and Mice infestations but never Dwarf Hamster infestations

If you have a pregnant dwarf hamster there is nothing to worry about they have their babies usually at night when you are asleep and in the morning when you wake there they are!

Dwarf Hamsters are the bitingest things out there! I would take a gerbil over a Dwarf Hamster anyday.
Good Luck and don't forget to post pictures!

Wow, that is weird! I thought you meant the other was found in the same building! Hmmmm. I wonder how it would be able to survive in there for several weeks/months without a constant food/water source. Unless it did come from outside, of course. This reminds me of something that happened maybe a year or two ago. Somebody dumped a bunch of pet rats outside. Well, some were already pregnant and others soon became pregnant and before the town knew it there was this HUGE colony of fancy rats! Some were even domestic/wild hybrids. A few rescue groups ended up rounding them up, quarantining, socializing them and finding them all foster or permanent homes. I wonder if your apartment complex could have a colony of hamsters!!! Stranger things have happened!

Haha been there before.Bought a hamster was suppose to be a boy and I didn't bother checking.I had her for about a week and woke up one morning to see 6 little pink things wiggling around her! They do all bite sooner or later.Just give her toilet paper to nest with.Don't disturb her cage if she does have babies and keep it dark.Keep kids away! Don't handle her at all. Hope all goes well and pet stores will swap you the young ones for hamster food.

I once succumbed to "LittleFurryItis" and bought my kids a female Dwarf Hamster. I loved that thing. She was so sweet. I used to carry her around in my shirt pocket and let her ride around on my shoulder. She was perfect, and then..............

She hit puberty. At about 6 months old, she turned pure evil. About overnight too! It got to the point that to feed her, I had to distract her at one side of her tank to dump feed in. She would attck anything in her cage, and could jump to get you! It hurt so bad when she bit.

Our current gerbils are sooooooooo much easier and nicer to handle.

Sorry.. went off on a tangent. To the point... she might not be pregnant, some dwarf hamsters are just nasty LOL.

No babies yet...I see a small "pooch" but nothing huge like what I'm seeing on photos.

She's made her own small spot with the toilet paper...and she jumps and "hisses" at anything that enters her cage. She needs a freakin' time out!

You couldn't sex a hamster? Believe me, the boys are noticable. lol

Dwarves are NOT easy to sex. Syrians, yes, they are very easy to sex...dwarves...not so much. Only way I can do it with any accuracy is to have a dwarf past weaning and look at them either either straight down or up from beneath (through glass or plastic) and look for a v versus a u shape. V's' should be females, U's should be males.....they have to be relaxed as well.

They usually have their babies fine. They grow pretty fast and are very hardy......they are like rabbits....reproduce, reproduce, etc.....

I also disagree with this....you have to be very careful with female hamsters....they are, in my experience...the rodent most prone to infanticide when stressed, especially first time mothers.

I would treat the hamster as though she is pregnant and up her protein with some puppy biscuits or dog or cat food. Not all pregnant rodents look pregnant before they give birth. And the bulge doesn't reliably dictate litter size either.

I personally am not a hamster fan...especially dwarves...they are solitary and extremely territorial little spawn of satan creatures.....In the year and 3/4 I've been working in pet stores I couldnt' even tell you how many times hamsters, especially dwarves, have tried to bite me or have had to be separated b/c they were attacking one-another. I've heard of a *few* dwarves that were friendly and didn't bite....but not many...I will NEVER trust ANY hamster completely. Mice and rats make much better pets in my opinion...they are naturally social animals and their first instinct is to run when they are frightened....it is VERY abnormal for mice or rats to bite for no reason or even just when being caught (unless you are tailing them...they don't like that...but even then most still won't bite if you are quick about putting them on a solid surface like your palm or a table). I totally don't get why hamsters became SO much more popular than mice and rats....which are scores more friendly and trustworthy. Domestic mice and rats are genetically as far removed from wild ones as chihuahuas are from wolves....they are NOT the same thing as a wild rat or mouse...even so I don't get why people are so afraid of wild mice...its not like they're out to get you...

ok....I'm just a little partial.........sorry about my rambling...I'll stop now...lol
