Premier 1 Heat Plate

Brooder plates (and the MHP) don't work like a heat lamp so forget about the 95 degrees and 5 degrees less each week. Set the front of the heat plate so it's even with the chicks back and the back of the heat plate so it's a few notches lower. This will make the plate angled. The chicks will find their comfort zone under the plate. You will have to make height adjustments as the chicks grow.
There are lots of threads here on BYC about using brooder plates. Look around a little bit and I'm sure your fears will be calmed. They really are 100% better than heat lamps.
AND a really great thing is they sleep at night like normal. they are on normal time. so if IN house they are quiet! they sleep! i LOVE mine.

I and fearful about the heat lamp and fires. esp since I'm brooding in my house....
mine have been in garage with the heat plate. our nights would range from 30 to 50degrees. i cover the top when really cold and drape a flannel sheet at the end closest to garage door but they have always thrived! its way more normal right? like having a mother hen!

This Premier Chick Brooding Plate is amazing. I got my wee chickies home and put them in the brooder. I had to put one chick under the brooder plate and the other three soon followed. OMG! It was amazing. They found their sweet spot then came out for water. I had to lead them to the food dish with a trail of crumbles but they found their way. They drank and ate now they are warming up again. I still need to make a "hat" to put on top of the brooder plate. These are Barred Plymouth Rocks. Very cute.

I know this post is older, but I wanted to comment and ask if that’s a dog kennel you’re using for a brooder? That’s the first time I’ve seen that set up and wondered how you liked it?

Actually it’s supposed to be a bunny cage. It worked well for the 3 chicks that survived. I’m getting it setup for the BO chicks I’m getting on Wednesday.

I like my heat plate although I do think it burned a couple of them on their backs a small amount.

I brooded with it from the start. In cool garage first 2 weeks then in a dog crate in the coop. At 4w3d I removed it and they are doing great in ND spring temps.
