Preparing for my girls!

I do have my chicks already, and I got them all at the same time, so they are the same age. Also do you know what breed the chicks in the picture are? I have two like that (got my chicks from TSC) and they weren't sure what breed they were. I'm between either brown leghorn or speckled Sussex.

These two are backyard mixes, Road Island Red X Leghorn. RIR hen with Brown Leghorn rooster. If your chicks are from TSC and look like these then they are probably RIR, Red Sex-link, or New Hampshire Red. The older one grew up and had the body of an RIR with the tail of a Brown Leghorn. It can be pretty hard to tell the difference when they are chicks many different breed have similar markings as chicks.

I completely understand feeling like a kid at Christmas! I just picked up a shipment of chicks from the PO this morning. It was all I could do to get home. Half of them were a rare breeds assortment, so DD and I sifted through the possible breeds and figured out what they all are. It wasn't easy and it took some time, but we're confident in our estimations and it was a lot of fun!!!

Now I'm going to check the rest of the thread for pics.

Yay for babies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't know if this helps, but here's a pic of my speckled Sussex at a week or three (she's the one on the left) ..feathers look familiar the little "racing stripe" is almost identical to hers. I read you were worried about fighting; you'll get the normal pecking order malarkey going on, but they'll become the firmest of friends if they are raised together. It's lovely how they bond (maybe that's my loved in lot!!!) I won't add anything about brooder boxes etc as I'm in Australia and it's a bit different here lol. We raised 7 chicks in a wire cage with a light; no need for heat anything here lol!

Good luck, and have fun!!

I felt the same way when I got my first chicks. We got five. They were about 2 weeks old when we got them. They are now nice and healthy, haven't had any diseases yet. We just had a big container. Filled it with a layer of newspaper. Put some wood chips on top. We kept them in the house so they were plenty warm. We had a feeder we made ourselves and a water also. That's about it.

My two look exactly like that. Makes me real happy! Thank you!

From what I understand, the only way to prevent mareks (medically) is by vaccination. Medicated food is for coccidia, not mareks. If you feed it to a chick vaccinated for that and mareks it will only render the coccidia useless.
From the research that I've done, the Mareks vaccine does not prevent the disease. What it does do is make any Mareks disease that the vaccinated chick contracts be less likely to cause the paralysis and tumors that the disease usually causes. So, you could have a flock of chicks that have been vaccinated, and still have Mareks disease in your flock. Any incoming unvaccinated birds would then be susceptible. Some hatcheries advise against Mareks vaccination for the small back yard flock. One thing that does help protect the back yard flock is exposure to turkeys, because they carry a less lethal strain. This works similar to the Dairy maids of long ago who were immune to Small Pox, because they had been previously infected with Cow Pox.

I can't pinpoint the exact breed but I created a mix breed chick that looked almost exactly like that. It was a mix of Golden Comet hen and Rhode Island Red Rooster. I don't know if I helped at all but just saying. :idunno

If you can afford it, go for the Brinsea brooder. It is fantastic. My chicks were already jumping on top of brooder from week 1 so I had to put something they could roost on. I also always put a little box (or foil tray) with a mixture of soil/sand and a some DE from about week 3 so they can have a dust bath. They really love it. I don't vaccinate and I have always gone the organic route so I have never had any disease problems. Good luck with your fuzzy butts.
