Don't worm unless there is sign of worms. Otherwise you run the risk of developing resistant parasites. As far as what age - look on the bottle of dewormer and it will say. Usually there is a dosage for under 6 wks and over 6 wks.

From what I understand, the only way to prevent mareks (medically) is by vaccination. Medicated food is for coccidia, not mareks. If you feed it to a chick vaccinated for that and mareks it will only render the coccidia useless.
I thought medicated feed helped prevent coccidia outbreaks. What about Mareks disease? Will feeding a medicated feed to chicks only vaccinated against Mareks negate that vaccine also?
Mareks is a viral illness and as such the active ingredient in medicated chick feed will not give your chicks any Mareks protection. In fact the Mareks Vaccination may not have any benefit towards preventing Mareks Disease but it is a WHOLE lot better than nothing.
Also remember that the term, "Medicated" is a catch-all phrase and it only means that the "medicated" baby chicken feed has a synthetic nutrient in it that will help depress the growth rate of, or starve the Coccidiosis organism, an organism that is a single cell parasite instead of a bacteria. Rest assured that feeding "Medicated" baby chick food will not result in all your hatchlings having two heads but it just may result in all your future human babies being born necked. At least for their mothers' sake I hope that is the case.![]()
Sorry I have been off for a while. To simply NOT protect your family and other animals on your property from worms because you dont "see" any evidence of them is just poor husbandry because we are the wrong host for round worms this causes them to migrate into the eyes causing blindness. Worm cysts are in the soil naturally - when the load shifts there is a problem. It doesnt seem wise to me to allow an animal to decline in health as an indicator I need to then properly address nutrition and bio-security. Ask your vet and they will tell you to de worm routinely as part of your flock management.
