Preparing Your Flock & Coop for WINTER

Has anyone ever heard of using shredded paper for bedding for chickens? Someone mentioned it to me and I didn't know if it would be advisable to use it or not. Any thoughts positive or negative?

I just have a small urban chicken coop. I have three full size chickens that sit wing to wing in the coop at night. The nest boxes are connected to this same area.

we live in the Texas panhandle it we can get cold but mostly the chill factor is a worry. Any advice? Oh and they have free range of the yard and I have attached this up on 1x10's so they have more head room to wonder until I get out out here in the mornings to let them out.

As long as it's ventilated and they aren't sitting in a draft they are fine. What Texans call cold weather is a nice warm day here in Wisconsin. You could make a wind break on the side of the run to block any prevailing winds, bales, plywood, tarp, a fence panel, anything like like can work.

I've winterized my coop. I decided to wait till next year to purchase the clear tarps. I just don't have it in the budget to purchase them this year. I used the clear shower curtains I had last year. They are still in good shape, so no reason to buy new. I did put up a tarp in the alley way of the barn.

I'll make my 2 cookie tin heaters over the weekend, and I'll be set for Winter.

I would put clear plastic up on the North side and maybe one or both ends. This will give them a wind break and keep the snow out that you get in the panhandle. Does your coop section have any air vents? I can't see any from this pic.

I believe I read by someone who used it that it needed frequent changing. I think MEEP-BEEP is right; the glue holding paper pulp together will probably get messy and smelly.

We used to use it for cats and puppies in the animal hospitals I worked at, especially for cats that had surgery of any kind because litter could work under bandages and into incisions. Even changing it regularly, we knew that it could get gummy and that it held odors. I don't know how that would relate with chickens, but that experience was enough to make me not even want to try it. It might be okay mixed with straw, shavings or hay, but then why bother with it in the first place if you'd have to use that stuff to make it workable, you know?
