Preparing Your Flock & Coop for WINTER

just a hint try not to use warm water as best u can it freezes faster i found that out the hard way i filled my waterer one night at 630 with warm put it in walked back out a half hour later it was froze the next time i filled it with cold it didnt freeze for a couple hours
I was going to run some experiments this winter since I have two buckets, one warm, one out of the horse tank with a stock heater, I've been pondering this, when I was unable to take care of my critters this past winter my husband did it and he doesn't carry warm water out like I do, he just uses trough water, I also had a rooster get frostbitten feet and eventually his whole leg, but I'm pretty sure he probably splashed or spilled more water than me and got his legs wet. I'll never know. Thanks for the heads up.

Blooie I still envy your greenhouse run, I'm sure my chickens would love it too, we have similar climate too. Bring it.

Of course not, but my point was that warm water does seem to freeze faster.

Occasionally, yes. But most times not. Scientists aren't really sure what is at play when it does. At various times it has been attributed to rate of evaporation, relative temperature to each other, convection principles, and most recently the strength of covalent bonds within the water molecules. I will continue to take out warm water to my chickens in the winter. I'm a gambling woman and I'll play the better odds.

If I remember, I will let everyone know how my water buckets experiment works, though odds are on my forgetting all about it.
