Pretty sure they're not Pekin Bantams

Hi All,

We hatched 9 eggs on 27th May which we were told by the farmer were Pekin Bantams. One of them sadly didn't make it past week 2 and the two that we recently identified as clearly being cocks have gone to a new home.

Of the 6 remaining birds that are now 14 weeks old it seems reasonably apparent that three of them are not Pekin Bantams. Can you help identify them for me from the photos? Do you think the white and brown/black ones are also cocks? There's a definite green shine to the feathers.

Thanks!

Wyandotte or crosses maybe... definitely not pure breed Cochin... they would have straight combs.

Yes your one is a cockerel (his color might be called Wheaten or brown red)... all my black birds have green sheen even females. But saddle feathers don't lie. Your white one (maybe splash) appears male as well...

Your blue and Lav (?) are pretty girls. :love

Body type seems wrong for Cochin/Pekin... But I am here to learn as well. :pop

Agree with EggSighted on the genders. The splash and dark ones are cockerels, the blue a pullet. The breed has me stumped, though. You've got birds with pea combs, no beards, slight feathering on the legs, white skin, and pure but different colors. I think they must be mixed breeds, but of what I am not sure. I would say Cornish crossed with Pekin bantams, but that doesn't account for the white skin.

Yes, my mix up. Not Wyandotte.

Definitely thinking crosses... I love a good chicken mystery. :pop

The red ear lobes are correct for the breed stated by the farmer! :p

I know mix ups happen. I keep all my breeds pure in separate pastures. But once in while a rooster will somehow get where he doesn't belong. Or eggs get mixed from different pens during collection, which I keep different colored egg layers to help combat that. But things DO happen. I would send them the pics and ask their ideas, without being accusatory.

Thanks everyone. We'd been trying to kid ourselves that they were all pullets as they didn't have the obvious combs and wattles that our pekin cockerels had. Thanks for the confirmation that we needed. Now to find new homes for the boys!

Appreciate your efforts on identifying the breeds too. I'll have to speak to the farmer and find out what else he has that could have gotten mixed in with the pekins.
