Hello I just needed to put one of my girls down. She was very weak wasn’t eating couldn’t walk, and her vent was a mess.
She was about five. I have six remaining girls from the ages of 3 to 9. Three of them are americana’s three are speckled Sussex.
No one shows any signs of illness, but two of them do you have mess vents. Is there any recommended antibiotics or medication that I can give the rest of the girls as a preventative proactive measure?
Thank you, all for any advice

Do you still have the body? If you send it to a state lab for a necropsy then you'd know what you're dealing with, otherwise you're just shooting in the dark. You need to keep the body refrigerated, not frozen, until you send it off.

There is no point in giving antibiotics unless you have a sick bird and you know what you're treating. The overuse of antibiotics is why we now have antibiotic-resistant bacteria that medicine cannot overcome.

There's no point giving certain medicine inless you are sure what the cause of death was. As in, if it's fungal the antibiotics won't do anything.

If you want preventative measures you can do two things:.

1. Clean the coop as best you can. Scrub the water vessels with soap or even with 10% bleach/90% water and then rinse them thoroughly.

2. Give the flock poultry vitamins. Easy to add in their water and a small thing that goes a long way.

Other than that just keep monitoring for symptoms.
