Preventing hens from eating their own eggs?

If there is only one bird how would you incubate the eggs? They won't be fertile? Sorry if I missed something.

I think, the duration is what matters. Would it be a problem if I start the process within 3 days after she lay?

My girls are golden sex links and will be 3 yrs old this April. I don't supplement light in the winter, I don't like putting that much stress on them. But last winter I got 1 - 2 eggs a day. They are my babies, which is why I didn't get rid of them when they were eating their eggs. I did a lot of threatening though

because darn it, their eggs are the best I've ever eaten!!

I don't supplement light either - I figure that I'm going to get the same number of eggs anyway, just spread out over a longer time, which suits me fine.

I hope they paid attention to your threats! As you say, they are the best eggs ever - it's no wonder that your girls want a taste of them as well!

If you don't have a cockerel then the eggs won't be fertile.
However if you have a cockerel or you get fertile eggs from somewhere else then it is not a problem to start incubating them a few days after they have been laid. In nature chickens will lay one egg a day in a nest and then walk away and carry on their day as normal. When they are happy with the number of eggs they will start to sit on the nest and incubate them, which can be a week or so after the first egg was laid.

Of-course! I had a rooster. It was a pair but after the death of rooster, she is now alone.....Thanks for info.
