just wanted to share something we found, we were concerned about our hinge on our nest box leaking since it is an exterior nest box. At Home Depot and Lowes they sell a rubber mat that you buy by the foot. It is used to put under a shower tray- to protect floor and walls from any leaking water. HD had a 4 foot wide and Lowes had it at 5ft wide- so depending how long your nesting boxes are you have two choices. We are hoping this works- we ( my husband) attatched it under our siding and it lays flat over the hinge and onto the shingles. We were looking for something flexible enough to handle the many openings of our nesting box- this is all new to us and wanted to try and share a little something to give back a piece of what we have learned! Hopefully this will work!

Hi, Thanks for the heads up. Been looking for something similar to seal gap at hinge area on the nest boxes on our large coop. Same plan..tuck under siding and let it overlap the gap and just free float soth that when lid is raised it can move. Thanks for sharing...will look into this.

That was my hubby's idea too but we did not have any old bike tires or anything around. The stuff was $4 and change at home depot for a 4ft x1 ft section and just under $6 for the 5ft x 1 ft at Lowes. We figured it was worth the $6! Gonna rain in 2 days- had we had more time we probably could have done it for free with the tube/ tire idea! oh well at this point- i think I am starting a new catch phrase- not only is there chicken math but I think there is coop math too!

I used the rubber roof used in warehouse construction. It comes in rolls 20 feet wide by around 100 feet long. I've had a bunch of it for some time and I use a pair of sheers to cut a strip to cover the entire width of the boxes 6 inches wide. Works real well.
