price of chicken meat

I don't really know all your prices and feed costs, but year in S.A. compare to the market's prices we also can not come close to those prices, but one thing that stays a fact, no chicken taste as good as (what we call-braaikuikens), I slaughtered at six weeks and got weights of 2kg(4 pounds) up to 2.5kg(5ponds). And we couldn't keep up on the demand from our client base. The big guys mixes their feed with a lot of fish crab and stuff cause its cheaper.

Your chart shows that grocery chicken is going for an average of $ 3.56 . lb.

That's what the grocery store buys the chickens for, not sells them. That's what the producer is making. I'm sure the store has its own markup.

But this is for humanely raised, good tasting pastured poultry, not for Tyson factory farm mush birds.

Well, in that case ... that is even worse news for the consumer. As for your other comment regarding " humanely " raised birds ... in my job with a major University Veterinary Pathology Department, I went to quite a few of the " factory farms" ( as well as slaughter houses ) and I saw professionals at work in sanitary deep litter methods, climate controlled, and bio secured housing environments, on call or on site avian Veterinarians, State Pathology labs for cause of mortality testing, and fed scientifically balanced diets compared to many back yard wanabe farmers operations. Being pastured does NOT automatically equate to be humanly raised or even getting a balanced diet. That depends on the area soils, weather conditions, presence of pathogens and predators, type of forage and amount of grazing pressure, what additional feed (if any ) is provided and amount of or lack of insects. And most of all, it all depends on the management skills of the flock owner which often is quite lacking.

The use of Anti-Ag Buzz Words such as Factory Farm, Humanely Raised, Grass-Fed, only muddle the waters of the discussion of where our foods is produced.

I have been on Organic Farms where the conditions of the animals was appalling, almost stomach turning and I have toured large commercial farms where the buildings were cleaner than many kitchens.

The division in AG is caused by US, not the consumer. We in food production should desire to have the consumer understand that chicken, regardless of production methods, comes from an animal and not simply "The Grocery Store". Attacking various systems as a part of your advertising campaign might gain you some business but it opens the door for those that desire to eliminate animla products from our food system to gain a foothold, enemies such as HSUS and PETA whose goal is for a Vegan food system.

I think the main difference for me is not if they are raised by an individual or a commercial farm BUT where are they going to process them (China) AND what chemicals are they going to add to the chicken (lots of chicken in the grocery stores because I buy it says injected with 15% saline solution and other additives). So it isn't who is raising them but are the chicken going to be processed in the US under safe health conditions for us to eat and not pumped full of chemicals before it gets to my plate. Those are the 2 reasons why I am going to start raising my own meat chickens.

Whisper......be vewy, vewy careful......once the meaties come in, chicken math will kick in and the next thing you know you will be incubating the eggs from those layers you first got "just" to have eggs, and you will eventually be like this:

Don't say I didn't warn you.....

I can promise one thing, your own is much more tastier then any store's chicks, here in S.A. our butchery's also buys from local guys, cause there is genuine a huge difference in taste. I used to slaughter 400 a month of my own, we usually took two days to do all, t5hat was 3500 chicks in total, father in law had 1500, nephew had 1000, and brother in law had the rest. And still we could not supply the demand

Tooo Funny BCMaraniac! Thanks for making me smile. Ok the truth of the matter is I am Whispering Hope Farm.com LLC and I do have a cow (supposed to have a baby any day but still waiting!!!! can't wait to have cow milk!!!!), 2 horses, 7 breeds of bunnies (even meat bunnies but haven't processed any yet because I am a chicken!!), 5 mini potbelly pigs and 4 piglets at the moment, lots of different breeds of chickens with not 1, not 2, but 3 incubators!!!, then someone so nicely decided to donate to the farm a pair of pekin ducks that the girl was already laying an egg a day so guess what - yep you guessed it, I put my incubator to work and now I have 18 ducklings!!!! (did sell 5 yesterday or it would have been more), 2 different breeds of goats - mini silky fainting goats and nigerian dwarf dairy goats that I milk twice a day, 3 babydoll sheep, and to top it all off Bear, my great pyreness guard dog to protect everyone! My 2 kids are in on it with me but my husband tried intervention when I started collecting them all a couple years ago and finally gave up and decided to live with them!!! So the lady on the video is absolutely right!!! The only thing I haven't tried yet is the meat chickens which I have to order.

Life is full of chores but lots of love from my animals and I am content!
