Hey there wonderful BYC community! I just wanted to ask a quick question about the pricing for a dozen duck eggs. A lot of people in the area sell $2.50 to $3.00 a dozen for chicken eggs, but what can duck eggs fetch?

We recently brought home two female Khakis, and have three hens as well. So we are going to have a bit extra to sell.

Thank you for all your help!

I sell mine for $6-6.50 a dozen. I started at $6 a few weeks ago and after adjusting for carton prices and what not I changed it to $6.50 a dozen. Anyone I originally sold to for $6 gets that price but all new customers are $6.50. Most people around here charge $5 for chicken eggs and $7-8 for duck. I don't do house calls and they must come here to pick them up. So far I have a waiting list 2 weeks out. A lot is going to depend on your area.

Good gracious! How many ducks do you have laying?

By the way thank you so much for your reply- it is a big help!

No problem! I have 5 ducks and usually get 5 eggs a day with a day or two of 4 eggs. I don't sell more than 2 dozen eggs a week and I make sure that I have all the eggs I need/want before I fill any orders. I think next week I will only have enough eggs for 1 1/2 dozen to sell which works out since those are all going to coworkers of my hubby. I have a craigslist order of 2 dozen and another repeat customer after that. I put an ad on Craigslist and didn't get anything for a while. Now everyone wants them. A lot of people who aren't from the U.S. Are the ones who are the most interested. I love meeting new people too so it's great. I would say it might be better to start at a higher price point and drop prices than try to raise prices if they are too low.

I really appreciate all of your input, again! Yes I notice that duck eggs aren't easy to find , so anyone who appreciates them I think would be willing to give a bit extra. I thought of starting at $5, but no less than $3.50 if I don't get any hits on it.

We have three area papers/bulletin boards, and an auction that frequently sells eggs. I think we may have some good luck with it, but I know most of our eggs will be home use, or good-will gifted to family members who bake or need eggs. I'm excited to be able to have a fridge full!

Another quick question- do you wash your eggs off before putting in the fridge? I see there is some debate about washing them due to risk of salmonella or something. What's your opinion?

I don't wash or refrigerate my eggs. I will clean them off a bit with a paper towel but if they have fresh bedding they usually aren't very dirty. The really dirty ones I keep anyway. I bounced some ideas off of friends on how they felt about cleaning and refrigerating. Mine are never older than a week though and if I knew they weren't going to be used for a while I might refrigerate them. It's just once you do refrigerate them they can't be left out.
