Primal/paleo folks?

I personally don't, they don't agree with my stomach but nuts in moderation are certainly acceptable. I have made nut based granola, served with coconut cream topping and the kids LOVED it.

Do you eat a lot of nuts to gain fat content as well?

I wouldn't say I eat A LOT of nuts, but I do have a handful or a few tbsps of natural nut butter (usually almond for me! yum!) probably 3-4 times/week. They can bother some people's tummy to have too many but I don't have any issues with them.

Thank you for sharing that tip on creamer, that is something I miss but don't feel like I need, my hubby will be grateful :)
I am surprised there aren't more people piping in, I can't say enough about it I have converted my Sister and Mom as well!

Glad your hubby will like it :) I love my morning coffee but felt the need to cut down on dairy. He will most likely like this better than cream! I do!

I am slowly converting hubby LOL I have converted a few friends too though, and my mother-in-law.

We area Paleo family too. I am getting better and better at it the longer we go. There are such great resources! I love "the paleo mom" and her new podcast!
Anyway! On the paleo chicken note what and how do you feed your chickens?

I was primal for almost a year until we moved earlier this year and we lost our first flock of hens to a raccoon. Afterwards I fell back into the SAD and gained 30 lbs! The hens and primal kind of came together - I spent more time outside with them, lifted heavy things, etc. and they provided me with fresh, nutritious eggs. There were an integral part of my 'conversion' - I probably ate 2-4 eggs a day everyday! Plus I had two small raised garden beds and containers filled with veggie plants on our deck all of last year. We moved to our place of business, so no hens & gardening meant I hung out at work in front of my computer or the TV inside a lot more.

I'm the only one really interested in the paleo diet/lifestyle - my BF is just kind of riding my coat tails. Eating paleo cleared up my IBS, chronic sinus congestion, and skin. My BF even realized he gets terribly congested after eating any bread product, but doesn't care. I'm slowly working on getting back on track. We got some chicks back in July, so I should have eggs come Nov/Dec and I have almost a dozen fruit trees on order to plant this fall. Once I get a garden going again and have laying hens, it will be easy for me to stick to it.

I get our feed from a local milling company instead of bags of factory processed food. Its not organic or soy-free, but its better than the unrecognizable pellets that I was getting from TSC with the last hens. They can't free-range right now, so I actually catch bugs and collect wild edibles on our property for them to eat, on top of veggie scraps from our kitchen. I'm working towards having them free-range at night and growing some plants just for them around their run they can pick at during the day (through the fence).

Hi, your girls won't free range at night. They will only roost. Chickens can't see in the dark. Also they need to be completely protected from predators at night. I haven't heard of paleo. I'm going to go google it.

A great article to sum up the why behind paleo is at http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/2010/09/19/paleo-diet-solution/ it is a guest post from Robb Wolf who is a bit of a guru in the field because of his educational background. Again, I like The Paleo Mom for recipies and more everyday information.

To Matthew3590 nuts have more omega 6 than omega 3. They are full of great nutrients, but the fat content is skewed the wrong way (much like grain fed beef). Coconut oil, avacado and olive oil are better sources of good fat as well as pastured beef, lamb, goat (blech!) and chicken/eggs

Hey all! Thought I'd join in since we're mostly a Paleo family too! We started doing so out of necessity: all 3 of our kids are intolerant to dairy, gluten, and soy, and now I know that I'm also gluten intolerant and lactose intolerant. We cheat a bit with some grains because I find it too difficult to spend enough quality time with the family if I'm constantly cooking, homeschooling, and doing the best I can in other areas for my family, so we do gluten free oats, occasional rice, quinoa for sure, etc. I love even more that all our eggs are coming from the backyard and not inhumane sources, along with most of our meat. Some of my favorite cookbooks are:
Make it Paleo
Everyday Paleo
Paleo Comfort Foods

Some ways we've been able to afford all the produce is by participating in a produce co-op (ours is Bountiful Baskets, which is nationwide); we also buy meat in bulk for our deep freezer, whole chickens from Azure Standard, etc. Paleo has really forced me to think outside the box for healthy ways to feed my family though! Can't wait to chat with some of y'all about this lifestyle.
