Looking at the Privett hatchery price list for 2018 they have a few breeds listed as “exhibition type” chicks. What exactly does this mean? That the chicks come from show stock? Any help is appreciated!

Hi. :frow

To me... exhibition type means... they were bred for their looks and not their laying ability or carcass size.

I would NEVER consider any hatchery to have show quality parent stock. But if I did... I guess I would go in knowing that even the best parent stock won't throw 100% great birds.

That's why I order 30 Silkies knowing very few would make the cut for breeding quality. Crazy to see how many more faults are in their birds than what I hatched from my own stock already... missing toes, extra toes, pink toes and so on.

ETA: I have not ordered from Privett.

Curious about this I looked up Privett then started looking at one of the "exhibition type" birds. Beatty White Leghorn search only brought up Welp Hatchery and there they say "close to white leghorn- exhibition type".

To me that does not say show quality. Only saw the Beatty and Red Shouldered Yokohama stated as exhibition type. Clearly you'd be better served sourcing from a breeder not hatchery.

In my opinion no hatchery can have the quality of birds that a private breeder would have. Some hatcheries have decent quality birds, and one of those is McMurray Murray.
If you want to get into exhibition you need to go to an APA/ABA show. You will be able to talk to many people with many different birds, and you will probably come home with some

Most of Welps birds are privetts and ship directly from privett.
I have privett birds but none that were the "exhibition type".
IMO they are fairly poor quality.
