Just in case I ever have to do this, how do you check a vent in case you think your chicken is egg bound or internally laying?

You put some olive oil on your finger and insert it into the vent. There are two openings, the top one is for the eggs and the bottom one is for poo. You can also feel around the chicken's underside before checking the vent; look for a hard, egg sized/shaped lump.
