About 2 months ago my neighbor gave me a White Leghorn rooster. Yes he was quite small..... I first tried him in the coop but my others were still too small for him. I have spring chicks and was hoping he would get along just fine with them. The problem started when he mated and killed one of my turkeys, After that I kicked him out of the coop. He was now a free-range Rooster..... He then got into my cucumber patch and ate every stinkin' one of the seedlings...... SO in the past couple of weeks I have been catching him in the tomato garden.... This was a big NO NO!!!!! I tried shooing him away and retraining him back over by the coop..... Today I was harvesting my tomatoes and had to give half of them to the chooks because he had eaten part of them..... I had had enough....... I went inside watched a quick youtube video on processing and went at it.... Throughout this process I made many mistakes and basically chopped the whole thing to h*** and back.... I got my chopping block, "Sharp Knife", Machete(couldn't find hatchet) and a bucket along with trash bags....... I gathered the rooster in a cage and went to work. Everything was going fine until I went to chop his head off...... The machete that I used was not as sharp as I hoped it was it took a few blows..... Then I plucked him (No problem at all)..... When it came time to gut him I had no idea what to do lol..... So I cut around the vent and tried to pull it all out..... This was not so good.... Finally I got him in and tried to cut him up and that's when the whole process became for nothing...... I ruined my bird it was so bad that all I got off it was two legs and thighs...... I know this sounds terrible but this is only the second time I have ever butchered a chicken...... Can yall please give me some advice? I do plan on butchering about 10 birds in September and would like to be prepared.... I was thinking that I may cut the throat or use a hatchet next time, What do you guys prefer and are there any significant sites I can go to in order to learn? Thank you, I sure hope this never happens again haha......

There are videos that can show you what to do. If you google the whiz bang plucker the fellow selling the plans has some informative videos.

But it does take some practice. If you don't have someone to show you hands on you stand a good chance of screwing up a few before you get the hang of it. Might be frustrating but instead of getting too frustrated try to think of it as a learning experience.

As for advice, make sure your knives are sharp. Trying to butcher with dull knives is frustrating.
