HI all. I have come here asking for help with this same issue and received some helpful advice. My chickens are jumping over our chain link fence and going into the neighbors yard. I have clipped their wings, which worked for a short period of time. I have some barbed wire running across the top, but they have now started jumping over again. Now instead of a few birds doing this, I have 5-6 of them doing it. I really don't want to keep them locked in the run all day, so I was wondering if there is anything else I should try before having to build a bigger run that is covered.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all.

How much higher is the barbed wire than the fence top? I've been successful with weed whacker line, around 4" above the fence top. Could it be that the wire is too solid, so they really can sit on it? Cause if so, you need something they can't balance on nor go under. If you watch, they don't fly over; they fly up to, perch, then fly back down the other side.

Another suggestion would be to extend the fence top with some cheap netting. Then of course there is the old electric fence but that's too expensive in my book. The free weedeater line works perfectly for me.

Are you clipping both wings or just one side?

I heard the best way to do this is to only clip one side of the flight feathers.

We are building a chain link fence next spring. I hope my girls stay on their side. They are not big fliers and will not fly over chicken wire.

Good luck. I wish I had better advice.

It's only the younger birds I ever have a problem with. Even the Barred rocks and such don't fly the fence once mature. Most of mine are fat orpingtons that can't be bothered but the others could, they just don't. And it's only a 4 foot chain link fence.

We only clipped one side. I appreciate the input. I'll look into trying to extend the fence. Not sure I'll be able to right away. I'll also look into the weed eater string idea.

Thanks all.
