My Buff Orp has a bad injury. We have a coop that is the size of a horse stall, attached to an outdoor pen. We live in the NE so they are not going out that much. I have a flock of 5, 2 Orps, 2 EEs, and 1 black langshan rooster. We did not expect the rooster, just happened with the order. We wanted to only have hens. They are 8 months old and laying.

Anyway, this 1 orp has been losing feathers around her rump for a couple of weeks now. Today I noticed a red spot and went to take a closer look. It looks like behind her wing there is pecking down to her muscles, and the skin is separated from her side.

What can I do to help her? I don't think I will keep the rooster at this point. He has attacked me 3 times and I have small children. Just want to figure out a way to save the hen. She is eating and drinking and doesn't seem lethargic or anything.

Thanks for any help/advice. This is so upsetting to us.

One last question - could this be from the other hens? Thanks.

It is possible it could be from hens, but I would suspect the roo. Clean the wound like you would for a person and if you are able to separate her from the flock until she heals, just use an antibiotic ointment. If it shows signs of infection, supplement with oral or injected antibiotics. If she has to stay with the flock, I would use a product called "BluKote". It comes in spray on or dab on versions and helps with the wound, but also keeps the other chickens from seeing "red", which stimulates them to peck.

Send the roo to freezer camp, otherwise known as camp Kenmore....especially if you didn't want him anyway. Or, advertise him on Craigslist.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, unfortunate for the rooster, he is a nice guy, just about 3 times the size of the hens. I hope the wound heals. It is like a pocket, the skin is really separated from her body. I will separate her and hope for the best.
