Problem with my cat

Yep, Johnny! Isn't he gorgeous?

He has nice eyes and is a great actor. When I see your postings I always get distracted. LOL

We tried most of the things that was mentioned here. Thanks a lot for trying to help. It looks like we are going to have to declaw him because we just don't have the heart to let him go somewhere else to live. I take a lot of pride with my family and gosh, it is such a hard decision because I never really cared much for declawing cats. I guess that one has to go through the situation before they judge what another person does with their pets.

since we are confessing...me too. lol
I'm not crazy about declawing either. But if it's the only way to stop him then that is better than not keeping him.

We use soft paws on our cat & they work wonders. Only thing is they shed off every few weeks and you have to replace them. It took him a while to get used to them, but they don't bother him any more. The reason we didn't want to declaw him is because he has three extra toes on both of his front feet. We thought declawing might cause problems for him because of this.

As far as declawing goes, if it makes you feel any better my mom has two declawed cats. They are both perfectly happy & healthy, no balance problems & no litter box issues (some say declawing causes litter box problems). Both of the cats recovered from the opperation without much fuss and they still leap, climb, play and act like normal cats. I know declawing is not ideal, but animals bounce back from things quickly.

Good luck!

If you have decided to declaw, he will be fine. Once he has healed, you can't even tell he was declawed. We declawed at all ages. He has a good home now and deserves to keep it. Don't worry, again, he will do just fine and you will be happy with the results.

I was told that I should only have his front claws removed, I really feel that this is my only option. Is that how it is done. We are looking into the laser method

Brittany - please, try the soft paws caps first. We have two cats and use the soft paws on both of them. They work wonderfully. It does take a little time (a week or so) for the cats to get used to them. I only have to replace ours every month or so, and only the ones that shed off so it's not all of them at once. I buy mine mail order through Drs. Foster and Smith (www.drsfostersmith.com). There are 40 caps per package and they run about $25.00. Many pet stores carry them also, but sometimes don't have all the sizes, which is why I buy mailorder. You only put them on the front paws, and like I said, they last quite a while. I've had my current package for 5 months, and I still have a bunch left. Go to the website and there's a video that shows them. Please, please, please check into them. Declawing is so barbaric, it really should be done as an absolute last measure. Many of the vets around here won't even do it any more.
There is also two sided tape strips you can buy to put on your furniture. We used that with a cat we had a long time ago, and after about a month he no longer shredded the furniture. We also used the cardboard scratchers which sit flat on the floor. All our cats have seemed to perfer those over the cat trees.
I hope you find something that works.

We got the soft paw last night. The little booger ripped them all off but 2. I was so excited when I saw them too.

You should really only need to declaw him on his front paws. I also worked in an animal hospital. It is painful but you will/should get pain meds for him. It is a much better choice then getting rid of him. The back claws help them with stabilty when they jump on or off something. The laser is the way to go. Ask around and make sure that is what you get. Don't feel to bad about the choice. He will still love you and love being in your house.

try to softclaws again. We used them on our cat and stayed on for WEEKS, maybe you didn't use the right amount of glue, or press hard enough. Declawing can sometimes cause behavior problems, like peeing where they shouldn't, or now biting because you've taken their ability to scratch away.
