Problems with mosquitoes

I have some hanging in my coop and no mosquitoes in there - but then there aren't many anywhere else either right now so that's no proof.

I think I will try getting some of those and see if that helps. We have tons of "skeeters" in Louisiana.

In livestock catalogs they have these little machines that you put a can of spray in and they give a shot of spray every 15 minutes. With the air flow, the chemical is very minute, but it does the job.

I know this is an old thread now....but this is a new problem for me in Thailand. We also have the Asian Tiger mosquitoes of course (as well as other species). In the last 6 months I've lost almost all of my small flock (4 out of 6) to mosquitoes. They contracted Avian malaria. Just last night I lost a rabbit (my favorite). This is so disheartening! :(

So - do these machines that spray out insecticide really work? Are they safe for chickens? Rabbits?

I need to do something quick. I have my 2 remaining hens, and now a new batch of 4 chicks that I need to protect. (As well as 7 rabbits, 5 cats and 2 lovebirds!).

All advice appreciated.

Thanks

I don't know if this is going to be a product available to you, but I use a propane/electric Mosquito Magnet. I like them so well I have a running search on Craigslist for any that come up for sale. They are expensive, but worth their weight in gold. They take about a month to clear an acre of land, but once they start working, the mosquito population is nearly non-existent. I used to not be able to work on my land without a netted hat to keep the bugs off my face, but since using the Mosquito Magnets I can work free of encumbrances.

Our city uses the sprayers that you are asking about on their big game fields. I wasn't very impressed with them the other night when I was getting eaten alive at my daughter's field hockey game. I think that they are of limited value. Those sprayers merely drive the population back temporarily from a specific area.

Thanks CMV,

Could you direct me to a picture of these propane/electric mosquito magnets please.

Sounds like they might do the trick

I might have to check out the price of shipping and perhaps look on ebay.
Hi, I also live in Thailand in Chiang Mai. This season there are so many mosquitoes and my chickens all got sick from fowl pox from them.

My village has been bug sprayed, but there are still so many of them. When I go to lock my birds in for the night I get bitten all over my ankles and arms, and I can hear the nasty all around me.

I bought a cheap mosquito net and throw it over the small coop in the evening. Now there are never any mosquitoes in the coop. They people at the local village shop all thought I was a crazy farang buying a mosquito net for my chickens and had a good laugh about it.

Do not try the bug zapper machines - I tried one and it ATTRACTED more mosquitoes with the UV light!

I was told by my farmer neighbour that the bugs don't like lemon grass, so I planted a few large clumps of it in the run. I will break a few leaves off it and crush it in my hands, then rub the lemon smell over the chickens. This sees to help too. Good job I only have 8 small bantams!

Hi Jak,

The local authorities where we live in Chiang Mai stopped spraying the drains around our area this year and we sure have noticed the difference. I've now covered my chickens and rabbits with netting too. So sad I now can't let the chickens free range anymore, and for now at least the rabbits are stuck inside their small cages until I have the funds to cover their outside runs.

Thankfully none of us humans have contracted malaria or dengue so far, although one of our kids did give us a big scare this past week. After blood tests, turned out not to be malaria.

Our place is just swarming with mosquitoes, the dengue sort and the ordinary ones!

Thanks for the advice about the ultraviolet mosquito zapper. I have had one on in the barn over the last month or so. I certainly won't be turning that on again!!

I'll have to try lemongrass too. Would love an update from you sometime on whether this really has helped or not.
