My brother and I would like to start up a mobile processing unit. In Alberta we will have to be gov inspected but if we want to do it we will have to jump through the hoops!. Right now there are only 2 goverment inspected facilitys that I know of. The one is six hours away and we have to pay 4.25/bird. They send a semi down to get all the birds they are wieghed, bagged and flash froze. Its a big chunk of profit that I would like to see go into our pockets instead of theres. So my question what do you pay and what would you expect to pay in "your area" for a close to home gov inspected mobile processing unit? Thanks everyone for your input

I wouldn't do it anything less than $4.00. A don't do custom processing very much anymore as I have too many birds that I'm afraid if something came in disease wise I would be screwed. However if I know the person and know where they got their birds from, I will usually tell them to bring some beer... and I will show you how to process them. Normally they are thrilled, and learn a lot.

But if I was you $4.00 would be the minimum.

$4.00 is what I paid last year. That was not USDA inspected, though the facility is state inspected.

I did not like paying that much. I am thinking about building myself a plucker and doing things myself this year.

Rather than being willing to pay more for a USDA inspected bird, if the price were higher I would simply be more inclined to do it myself.
