Nope!

None of my Heritage birds are considered fast growers....They are not hybrid monsters that are ready to process in 6 weeks.

Not in the pectoral, but have seen the discoloration on leg joints when the bird had suffered an injury and was culled, more frequently on the meat birds. Ugly muscle bruise i associated with the muscle tissues being torn and capillary bleeding in area...if a breast is oversized i would expect damage from it's own weight pulling it away/apart from the 'tender'.

While I grew up on a farm and hunted since I was .... 6?...... and it is hard for me to understand getting emotional about these things that just must BE ....... try to frame it this way: They are chickens. They were created for this. Meat birds were made to be eaten. DP breeds as well, after they outlive ther usefulness as egg producers or breed stock ..... you are the farmer, on however smal or large a scale, and your job is to husband your land and animals ..... to have them be the best whatever they can be ..... let them get to the top of their game, to be all they can be, and that's it ....... to do otherwise would be a disservice to the breed. Conserve the desired traits, and make food from the rest.

With regard to meat birds: Think about it this way: You bought or hatched them because they would make weight fast..... many generations of these birds' lineage were striving to produce what it is that they are now ..... it IS why they exist, at all...... don't dishonor that. They are now all they can be, at the top of their game. If that's not what you want..... buy or hatch something else next go round .....

Fire ant farm- lovely post. And in enjoyed you list. Thank you for sharing it.

I agree with you about being better for the thoughtfulness and process. Thinking about it can make some of feel guilty, stressed, etc but it's also the way we figure out how to do better next time and forgive ourselves for the things we felt we've been clumsy at this time around.

Ok jumping on this thread because we harvested our first chicken today. I was worried more about my kids but they seem fine. My middle boy is a little off but the rest seem fine. We are about to have chicken pot pie for dinner and I still feel awful. This was a dual purpose bird that turned out to be a rooster. We knew the plan including eating any roosters. I know that it is good for my kids to know where their food comes from but I still feel terrible...

Why do you think that is? You've eaten chicken before this?
