Your fire its too hot, probably. Try putting the heart at one side and cooking on the other side (indirect heat)
No that is everything I cook. Dh won't let me run the grill. I make salad.

DH is paranoid to grill, I like stuff crispy and even a tad burnt!

but then again I love burnt popcorn!! can ya just smell that comment or what! he he he

I love burnt popcorn. Not so much charcoal but burnt just enough for the flavor. DH made fun of me for burning the microwave popcorn til he figured out I was doing it on purpose.

WaxM I want to invite myself to dinner. What time should I be there?

I am reading everyone's suggestions and learning so much. Thanks for sharing and thanks for starting this thread Sally.

P.S. My cooking skills are not as bad as I make them out to be but pretty close. I prefer baking.

oh no, why is that?

::deep breath:: i dont know, it is very involved (which i knew it would be) but those obnoxious cluckers are freakin cute and happy to see me. I *hope* that once they are dead I can take over with the rest of it as Ive told the hubby that its HIS job to kill them and Id do the rest... i find myself reading the thread and literally getting sick to my stomach, this is my first rodeo and weve lost a few laying hens to predators and two who simply dropped dead but we buried them... ive never had to kill (or clean) something this big (nothing bigger than bugs)

Here is a pic of my tub plucker. Are you making up stories again, for I see no tub or plucker!
gig.gif
Well we can try again on the pic. Top pic is my Red Ranger Cockerel 11 months and over 16 lbs. I got the large pully and shaft as well as the pre drilled plate from whizbang actually cheaper than ebay. I got my plucker fingers on ebay though. Motor from tractor supply

Possible But I really want a tub style one and Will get it I have the tub I just need the rest .. there is a kit on ebay for like 375 .00 comes with just about everything you need to build it except the tub and wood and motor or course , I may just buy the kit and figure the rest out My husband does AC work so he can get the motor he says, but if I start soon It will be ready for my next round of birds
Check whizbang he may be cheaper and it was all predrilled
If you want grilled chicken from your home raised birds, the are a few things to keep in mind. Brining helps loosen the muscle fibers. Grilling dries out food making it tough, that is the basis behind beer can chicken. I use a pan of water in my grill. I also cook low and slow (250-300 I try to stay under 275). Two hours for chicken halves its not unusual.
This is a picture of my grill setup

Small charcoal fire on the side, (sometimes both sides) meat over water, close up vents to keep fire low and increase smoke.
I prefer chunk charcoal and sometimes throw s hunk of wood on the coals to add smoke flavor (cherry, pear, apple work well for chicken).
Baste as desired to add more moisture.
I use a smoker with indirrect heat around 200* to 250* 300 if I am in a hurry. Mainly apple wood with some maple. Honestly it does not need anything else, somke does it all

You can do it. If I can you can. The killing is the worst part. Definately get your husband to do that. It is very upsetting for the first while tho I will not deny that at all. Don't get attached to the meat birds. spend as little time with them as possible apart from feeding them
