Processing Day Support Group ~ HELP us through the Emotions PLEASE!

Those dang moderator,,push their idea of friendliness, respect and comfort down my throat . Gawd what an awful site that has turned into...I posted a youtube video of a jap batam and Aseel fighting..This was taped in Thailand..I though how cool it was that the little bird was holding his own with a roo four times his size. I sure don't promote Cockfighting..But by posting the video ..They say it is...
This is some tape in somebodies back yard. How many times have we all had roo get in fight with each other,,,,roos fighting part of their world. This is a natural instinct in all bird and animals.yet we can not point it out on BYC because this is uncomfortable? I say talking about your breast cancer on BYC is uncomfortable to me. We have become so squimish what we allow other to say around us. Really?

"Please specifically look over "Rule # 14 - Animal Rights or Cock Fighting".
We work hard to ensure our wonderful community maintains a tone of friendliness, respect, and comfort. If after reviewing our forum rules you still have questions, please reply to this message with your questions."

I finally got a picture of some of the CX we processed. The one in the center of the bottom row is over 6lb. All the ones that I did weigh while we were putting them up were between 5 and 6+lbs.
Sweet!! Looks like you'll be enjoying some great chicken this summer!

We love our Food Saver also, we use it constantly and it has been awesome for our fish in particular. We don't have a quarter of the losses to freezer burn we used to get. And now can buy meat and other stuff in larger bulk amounts for the better prices and split it up into 'serving sizes' for our needs.

I was given the job and title of "Cleanliness Assistant," opening the bin of icy brine for the Evicerator to place the finished carcasses, so she didn't touch anything herself (other than the bird and her knife). She was teaching her step-daughter how to clean the carcasses, so I got that benefit, too. Once the chicken is dead, the processing was very interesting. Even the body-reflex jerking and flapping was just part of the process, although not all the birds exhibited that behavior. The bleeding was as expected. It wasn't even a problem for me when the all white Cornish X feathers got bloody. The scalding was okay. Dead chicken, no biggie. Using the Whizbang Plucker made things so very simple, and I found it amusing to watch it in action. After all, the chickens were dead. I was perfectly fine until the third bird was carried past the Cleaning Area. She clucked, an inquisitive, confused few bokkity bok boks. I lost it. Although I was encouraged to come back outside to watch some more, and I accepted the challenge after I stopped crying, I will tell you straight up I am a "sensitive" person and now know I cannot be involved in the killing of the birds. Once they're dead, no problem. My flock members have almost always named themselves. I "hear" the name they want at some point as they mature. Of course, it is definitely ironic they seem to want old ladies' names, or other people names - for the most part- which I really know is *me* somehow, not them, but I get the information from something I feel from the poultry. And I "heard" -as plain as day- that meatie hen's confusion. Explaining this is bizarre. But I can laugh at myself about it. Sure, Linda feels for the chickens. No, she really, really DOES get messages from them. Usually it's something simple like "Where's my treats?" None of them have ever imparted barnyard secrets to the universe or anything. When I explained what id experienced to the step-daughter, she took it in. When the next chicken was carried by, it also clucked. Immediately, this sixteen year old girl started coughing. Loudly. "Nice job," I told her. "You ALMOST covered it!". And I laughed. She admitted that was exactly what she was doing. They processed 11 birds. 5 more to do tomorrow, and a couple more plus a turkey next Wednesday. I will try again next Wednesday - and just join the processing party after the chickens have been killed. Later, at dinner at a restaurant when i commended her again for her quick thinking and action, she said it was nearly instinctive, like a whole classroom beginning to cough when a student's un-silenced cell phone rings in class. We were all treating ourselves to burgers at the Gold Vine Grill in Somerset. Every Wednesday is Burger Night there. Scrumptious. I had the "Fairplay Burger" this time.

When I got my first chicks last year I never imagined I would want to eat my own birds. It took me awhile to eat the eggs! I was appalled when my husband suggested we eat our unwanted Roos. I gave them away instead and didn't want to know what the new owners had tended for them. Now I see the benefit of raising and eating our own birds. I just don't know if I can do it. I am willing to learn though. I wish I could have someone show me. I have a weak stomach and I'm not sure how it would go but I will never know unless I try. Anyone in the Pittsburgh area want to teach me?
