we just bought an English shepherd, his name is chap :p hes now 11 weeks... he comes from working lines and we got him right off the farm he was born ( drove to NC to get him) hes a really nice dog, very smart, we watched his dad work and he was a good guy, we havent seen much herding instinct as of yet though, although recently hes becoming more interested in the sheep, my pit has been helping to work the sheep by himself up till now, were hoping when chap is older that they will work together :)

Congrats on Chap! Although they are herders I haven't found ours to be obsessed by it... I would qualify ours more as 'watchers who will help when needed' rather than a dog who invents things to herd.

Good luck with Chap and have fun with him! They can be such a joy.

English Shepherds are probably at the top of my list right now.

I found a dog that looked like a cross between a Australian Cattle dog and a Smooth Collie the other day, lying in the middle of the road. I thought he had been hit by a car or dumped, so took him home with me. He would have been perfect, but I found his home. I don't need another dog for three or four years, but this dog was just perfect and the owner offered him to me. Unfortunately, I am full up with dogs (four mini Dachshunds and the pit) or I would have myself a new dog. Timing is everything.

I cook the heart/liver/kidney/neck for the dog. But I've never thought about using the rest - I guess I'll have to pay more attention next time I butcher one.

To be honest I am thinking about how much Turkey I have wasted at holidays!!!! POUNDS of it!!!

I would love a well trained dog. Growing up my brother trained our dog and she was a DREAM. Most obedient dog ever.

I'm terrible training dogs.... Guess that's why I'm a cat/chicken person, they're just going to do what they do... nothing to change about it.

How funny.......I was just searching English Shepherds this morning. Eventually, I'd like another dog (but I still have to convince the DH) and I want a dog that will be great with livestock. I currently have a German Shepherd (6 years old) and I love her to pieces, but she has a very high prey drive. She is great at chasing off critters, and sometimes catching them, like the jackrabbit she played with a couple of weeks ago. She is wonderful with the chickens if I am there - but if I am gone and one gets out (juveniles sometimes get out), she will de-squeak the squeaky toy.
